Downtown Memphis Commission Hosts ‘Magic on the Court’ Pep Rally to kick off LeMoyne-Owen College’s Homecoming Game Day


The City’s Only Historically Black College and University Begins the Celebration in Court Square on Saturday, October 30 at 10 a.m.

Memphis, Tenn. – LeMoyne-Owen College will kick off its first in-person Homecoming Game Day in two years with Magic on the Court , in partnership with the Downtown Memphis Commission. The College is hosting their annual celebration for alumni and students after a gap year due to the pandemic.

“We are proud to welcome LeMoyne-Owen, Memphis’ only HBCU, to Downtown for the Magic on the Court pep rally,” Paul Young, Downtown Memphis Commission president and CEO and LOC Board of Trustees member. “The impact LeMoyne-Owen has had on our community is significant, and we are honored to be involved in this day and to show our support! Go Magicians!”

Magic on the Court will feature entertainment by the Magician Marching Band drumline, flag squad, and cheerleaders. Additionally, key College leadership, including LOC president, Dr. Vernell Bennett-Fairs, members of the LOC Athletic Department including Men’s Basketball Head Coach Gawen
‘Bonzi’ Wells, alumni association leadership, and students.

“We’re excited to kick off this special day in Court Square, a landmark in Downtown Memphis,” Dr. Vernell Bennett-Fairs, LOC president says. “This partnership with the Downtown Memphis Commission is one of many great things happening for LeMoyne-Owen College.”

The pep rally will culminate Homecoming Week by celebrating LOC alumni locally and nationally and cheering the Magicians on in their basketball game against Edward Waters College beginning at 4 p.m. Weeklong activities included an exhibition games against University of Memphis, a career fair, coronation, and Spotlight Day – a recruitment event to introduce high school students to LOC.
