Mission:
The Hollis F. Price Library mission is to provide reference and
instructional services to the college community and to ensure that
students and faculty members have access to essential resources.
Library Hours
Monday-Thursday: 7:45 a.m. to 9:00 p.m.
Friday: 7:45 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
Saturday: 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
About the Library:
The Hollis F. Price Library was named after Dr. Hollis Freeman Price
(1941-1982) the first African American President of The LeMoyne-Owen
College. The award winning architecturally outstanding facility
features a mosaic mural by Ben Shahn. In additional to a collection of
books, periodicals, videos, CD's and vertical file clippings, the HFPL
has online databases, access to the internet and DVD-ROM workstations.
The Library of Congress Classification System is used to locate
materials. The HFPL is staffed by five professional librarians, a
library administrative associate, one full-time library assistant and
two part-time library assistants
The Hollis F. Price Library houses a collection of more than 85,000
volumes and subscribes to more than 375 periodicals. The library
provides open-stack access to the entire collection. Study seating for
300 is available at tables and in individual carrels adjacent to the
book stacks. The library is open six days per week while classes are in
session. The library's Sweeney Collection is a rich, special collection
of books by and about African Americans, focusing on twentieth century
American literature, poetry, and history. The collection includes many
first editions.
The library also houses the College archives, materials that document
The LeMoyne-Owen College's history. The archives include the papers of
past College presidents, faculty members, and alumni. The library has
established reciprocal and bilateral-lateral agreements with the
University of Memphis and Southwest Tennessee Community College to
share use of the respective collections by students, faculties, and
staff of the institutions.
Library Instruction/Orientation
Library instruction is provided during the fall semester through the
Freshman Seminar experience. Sessions for subject specific classes are
available throughout the academic year and during summer sessions.
Numerous topics are covered including: circulation policies and
procedures, and research strategies and resources (print and
electronic). The librarians can assist in planning assignments,
preparing the research paper, training for using the Internet and
software (Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel) and supplying
bibliographies or lists of appropriate resources (i.e., electronic
resources).
Confidentiality of Patron’s Record
The Library observes the American Library
Association (ALA) guidelines in regard to the confidentiality of
Library records. The circulation records and other records that
identify a patron name with specific materials are held in confidence.
The Library staff will not disclose the name of a person who has a
particular item checked out.
Copyright
The Library is in compliance with the provisions
of the United States Copyright Law. Under no circumstances will the
Library duplicate or place on reserve, material in violation of the
Copyright law. Notices are posted for patrons using self-service copy
machines to inform them to adhere to provisions of the Copyright Law.
